Post-Cold War U.S.-Japan relations have been characterized more by continuity than by change. A RAND conference on what recent leadership transitions mean for the United States, Japan, and their bilateral relationship indicated that the alliance has many strengths, but leveraging them toward combating regional challenges might be difficult.
