Ken dropped out of Purdue in his sophomore year because he wasn't motivated. The leaders of the youth group at Beville Ave. EUB Church, Mr. & Mrs. Wyatt, suggested Ken return to the youth group and said he might be interested in two girls who had joined the group. One of the girls, Carol Fuchs, was third in her class at Manual High School. The youth group had a progressive dinner where you spend the evening eating a meal course at different houses and socializing. Early in the evening Ken said hello to Carol and they spent the evening together.

At the end of the evening he asked her to go to a hockey game the next night. Carol said yes. Ken continued to ask Carol out and during the summer decided he needed to return to Purdue and get an education if he was ever going to amount to anything. The last time he saw Carol before he left for Purdue, he saw that she cared for him a lot. Carol asked Ken to write every day and he agreed. Ken liked Carol a lot, but he thought she liked him a lot more than he liked her. These are the letters Ken wrote to Carol.
