"This introduction to biomes opens with an overview of five main types: aquatic, forest, grassland, desert, and tundra. Distinctions within biomes, such as hot deserts versus polar deserts, are addressed later in the text. The bulk of the volume comprises lush double-page spreads of these biomes, filled with common animals and more unusual examples from around the world. The savanna, for instance, depicts giraffes and an elephant as well as a pangolin and hoopoe birds. While each spread gives a short explanation of the biome and an interesting fact about the animal, it is not meant to be comprehensive. The patterned, vibrant illustrations in golden hues for the plains, lush greens for the rainforest, rainbow colors for the ocean, and more are instead meant for browsing readers to glean information about representative animals and their environments. The visuals continue with concluding infographics. A pie chart, shaped like a turtle-shaped Earth, reveals the planetary proportions of each biome.
Endpapers sport the location of the biomes across the continents. A beautiful supplement to support elementary science."--Booklist.
