Blessed Clement, third prior general of the Augustinian Order, held this position in the 13th century during the period that may well be regarded as the most difficult and precarious of the Order's entire history: the period of systematic organization as a unified society and of preparation for the new mission, the apostolate. It was principally Blessed Clement who welded the heterogeneous elements out of which the Augustinian Order had been formed by the Great Union of 1256, into a body one in spirit and action as well as in outward appearance.
