Stacy McFarland, a kindergarten teacher and single mom of a three year old counting on her in every way, can't believe country singer Colt Ryder is seriously interested in her. Even if he is, he lives on the road and doesn't fit her lifestyle at all. She's already had a part-time husband, been widowed, and left to pick up the pieces. If there is to be a next time, she wants a full-time husband. Stacy doesn't know what to do with Colt, she's got him, and her best friend's chance of breaking into the music business rides on it. Colt is used to his stardom attracting women, not scaring them away, as it does Stacy. Nor is he used to competing against a dead man's mistakes. He's been on the road building a career, but is ready to also have a home life.

His own mother divorced his dad and left his father to raise Colt and his brother, so he wants a family oriented wife and thinks Stacy is the woman to give him that. For all her hesitancy, when he kisses her, he can feel the fire and the longing she doesn't voice. Convincing her of his suitability, however, he can see, is going to be a monumental task.
