Bilingual storybook: This is a bilingual storybook that is an adaptation of a well-known traditional story. This as well as the other traditional story adaptations like The Story of the Raven and the Loon and The Story of the Lemming and the Owl were originally created with the intention of teaching Inuktitut as a second language (which is why Roman Orthography is used instead of Syllabics). An introduction to Inuit legends: Inuit traditional stories like this one have been passed on from person to person for generations in the Arctic. These stories are part of Inuit oral history and are encoded with traditional knowledge and Inuit values. Because this book uses simple language and only 1-2 sentences per page, it can be used as an introduction to Inuit traditional storytelling and a jumping off point for learning about these important stories. Adapted by an Inuit linguist: Jaypeetee Arnakak is one of only two Inuit linguists in Canada as well as an Inuit educator. He has served as a policy analyst, commentator, and advocate for Inuit language and education rights. He currently works full-time for IEB as a Senior Inuit Language Advisor and is involved in Nunavut curriculum development and as a designer of Inuit language courses.
