Samuel Budgett of Kingswood, Bristol, (1794-1851), was a truly exceptional and successful Victorian businessman and passionate Christian, with great insight, vision, practical kindness, huge generosity, and extraordinarily diligence in application. His life is a great example for those who wonder whether a career in business can be an appropriate occupation for a serious follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, and for those who know it is! He knew God had called him and gifted him for business, and pursued with unrelenting passion his vocation, his care and provision for those who came across his path, and his life-centre personal relationship with God, until he died aged 56, having grown the business from one shop to a wholesaler with sales of £96 million, (in 2017 terms). This version has been abridged from William Arthur's 1852 original: "The successful merchant: sketches of the life of Mr. Samuel Budgett, Late of Kingswood Hill", which was republished 42 times over the following 20 years.
