Flight Attendants (Air Travel Made Clear) is a narrative nonfiction book that examines the flight attendant profession in depth, covering safety training, emergency procedures, the physical and psychological demands of the cabin environment, the history of the profession's labour movement, the cultural philosophies that shape service on international carriers, and the emotional labour that defines the role. The book opens with the ninety-second evacuation rule and three detailed accident case studies (Air France 358, US Airways 1549, and the Tenerife disaster) that illustrate the flight attendant's role as the primary safety professional in the cabin. It covers initial and recurrent training programmes, including firefighting, water survival, medical response, self-defence, and Crew Resource Management. It documents the physical environment of the cabin as a workplace: reduced oxygen, low humidity, cosmic radiation exposure, circadian disruption, and the occupational health consequences of long-term flying. The book presents the profession's labour history, from the stewardess era of the 1950s and 1960s through the Title VII challenges, the Diaz v. Pan Am ruling, the Laffey v. Northwest equal pay case, and the modern union movement led by the Association of Flight Attendants. It examines two contrasting service philosophies, Eastern (collective, hierarchical, rooted in Confucian and Buddhist cultural values) and Western (individual, egalitarian, rooted in labour movement gains), presenting each as a culturally authentic response rather than a quality ranking.

Five national carriers (Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Emirates, and Thai Airways) are profiled as examples of the flight attendant as national ambassador. The book examines emotional labour as defined by Arlie Russell Hochschild and applies the framework to the cabin environment. Written for a general audience with no aviation background. No jargon, no technical prerequisites. Part of the Air Travel Made Clear series.
