Filippino Lippi (1457/58-1504) was among the most important Florentine painters and draftsmen of the second half of the 15th century. Trained by his equally famous father, Fra Filippo Lippi, and by Botticelli, he developed a rich array of drawing types, becoming adept in both pen and ink and metalpoint studies. Fortunately, a relatively large number of authentic drawings by Filippino survive; this volume, which accompanies a major exhibition on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from October 28, 1997, to January 11, 1998, brings together approximately 80 of the roughly 150 extant sheets by the master -- virtually all his important drawings that are in good condition.Seven authors, all experts in the field, provide essays and entries on every drawing included, each of which is reproduced in color. The lucid texts examine Filippino's life; the development of his drawing style; his technique and workshop practice; his ornament drawings; and issues of authenticity, dating, and relationship to paintings. Also discussed are the drawings of Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Rafaellino del Garbo, Piero di Cosimo, and Raphael. A chronology of Filippino's life and color reproductions of his most important panels and frescoes are included.
