This book aims to help graduating science students navigate their way through applying for and obtaining an MSc, a PhD and a postdoctoral job, do well in each and then move on to a career in scientific research. One focus is on what scientists should set out to achieve at each stage of their early career, the other is on what lab heads are looking for and then expect when they take on PhD students and postdocs - the view from the other side of the table. The book's 34 terse chapters cover all aspects of graduate and postdoctoral research training and research-associated skills. The latter include how to choose projects, how to plan for interviews and oral exams, how to handle supervisors, how to write CVs, theses, papers and grants, and how to give talks and make posters. Professor Jonathan Bard is a biomedical scientist and was Director of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. He has more than thirty years of experience in graduate-student education and administration.
