Barbara Black has published two multi-award-winning collections of short fiction: Music from a Strange Planet (2021) and Little Fortified Stories (2024). Her first book was Winner in Adult Fiction in the 2022 Wishing Shelf Independent Book Awards. Black was recently shortlisted for the 2025 International Rubery Book Award as well as winner of the 2025 City of Victoria Book Prize and the Grand Prize in the International 2025 Eyelands Book Awards for her book Little Fortified Stories . Other accolades include winner of the 24th Annual Writers' Union of Canada Short Prose Competition, and shortlisted for the 2020 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. Black's work has appeared in many national and international publications and anthologies, including The Cincinnati Review , Geist , subTerrain , The Hong Kong Review and The Plaza Prizes International Literary Competition Anthology 1 . As a flash fiction writer Black was shortlisted for the 2023 Edinburgh Flash Fiction Award and won First Prize in the international Plaza Prizes Microfiction Contest and Second Prize in Flash Fiction. Black lives in Victoria, BC, where she gardens and rides the twisties on her trusty Triumph motorcycle.
