Political Economy and Sociolinguistics explores how political economy intersects with sociolinguistics, specifically how neoliberalism, inequality and social class mediate language in society issues. First, this book considers how sociolinguists have used political economy to frame their research over the past several decades. Secondly, it discusses in detail contemporary global Marxist political economy and three phenomena which scholars working under this general umbrella have examined in recent years: neoliberalism, inequality and social class. Following this, the book presents two key areas of research. The first is a detailed treatment of how the 'neoliberal citizen'-as entrepreneurial, self-branded, innovative individual in contemporary society - has become a prominent figure in a diverse range of discursive contexts. The second area of research presented examines the discursive construction of 'class warfare', that is, how the neoliberal policies adopted over the past four decades around the world have constituted an outright attack on the well-being and survival of the popular classes. Specifically, there is a focus on how home evictions and protests against them in Spain are discursively constructed and represented, forming part of a broader class conflict and an ideological struggle over the formation of contemporary society.
