Little Wandle Code ensures effective reading intervention in early KS3. This tried and tested programme with accompanying resources comprising 10 age-appropriate, levelled and fully decodable anthologies plus 3 workbooks will support all students who are not meeting age-related expectations when they begin secondary school. Arctic Survival and Other Stories is the fifth anthology for the Complete the Code pathway. It is designed for students who may have gaps in their phonic knowledge which might be masked by coping strategies. The fully decodable anthology includes 4 texts for Units 10 and 11 in Complete the Code. The anthologies enable students to practise the code, broaden their vocabulary, develop comprehension, improve fluency, and motivate independent reading. Designed to look like the books their peers are reading, the anthologies include: * A variety of content: fiction and non-fiction, featuring a wide range of text types, genres, and well-known authors * Levelled practice: stories with varied word counts, length and complexity to provide sufficient practice, flexibility and choice * Appealing visuals: a range of illustration and photographic styles to motivate and engage KS3 readers. The anthologies are fully integrated within the Code programme and are supported by teacher and text notes available from the Little Wandle Code subscription.

In 2025, 25% of students did not meet age-related expectations for reading in the KS2 SATs meaning they started secondary school at risk of not accessing the KS3 curriculum. There is a national focus on reading at the start of secondary school to ensure every young person can achieve and thrive. There will be a mandatory reading test for all children at age 13 in Year 8.
