In its heyday British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) had workshops in every region that overhauled diesel and electric locomotives and multiple units, carriages and wagons. Visiting one of these installations was an exciting experience for many enthusiasts and members of the public alike, and a rare opportunity to see approximately a hundred locomotives undergoing refurbishment, overhaul and in some cases construction and scrapping. The British Locomotive Shed Directory once assisted enthusiasts to find the workshops and permits were available to individuals and parties to visit some of them at weekends or on open days. Glasgow, St Rollox Works was an extremely popular installation to visit to spot the highly sought-after Class 26 and Class 27 locomotives, which were not normally seen in any of the other workshops south of the border. Here many of these British Rail diesel and electric locomotive workshops are explored, bringing back fond memories for those who visited them. Through a wealth of previously unpublished images, this book features many of the different classes of locomotives in the workshops for construction, refurbishment, overhaul and scrapping.
