Viking Language 2: The Old Norse Reader is NOW AVAILABLE. Designed to accompany Viking Language 1: Learn Old Norse, Runes, and Old Icelandic Sagas (the first book in The Viking Language Series). Together the two books are a comprehensive entry to Old Norse and Icelandic language, sagas, runes, and eddas. Both Viking Language 1 and 2 are structured as workbooks, so that the learner works interactively with the material and learns quickly. Viking Language 2 is also a stand-alone text for those wishing to deepen their knowledge of sagas, mythology, history, and runes. The extensive Vocabulary continues the practice begun in Viking Language 1 of focusing on the 250 most frequent words in the sagas. The many cultural sections and maps in Viking Language 2 provide an introduction to Old Scandinavian culture and the world of the Vikings. Readings tell of the gods, goddesses, the final battle at the end of the world, as well as eddic and skaldic verse.
Runes are a major component in The Viking Language Series. This is unusual, in Old Norse studies, which often treats runes as peripheral. In fact, runes are a central aspect of Old Norse culture, and these books treat them as such.
