The story of the Great North Road is one, not only of ordinary people leading everyday lives, but also of kings, in victory and defeat, of conquering armies, highway robbers and as inspiration for authors. There has been a trail for travellers between London and Scotland for over 2000 years, long before the Romans invaded. In these early days, it was little more than a dirt track, unpaved and mostly muddy, passing through open fields and dense woodlands. This book follows the popular traditional Coaching route, presenting, not only the inns of yesteryear, but also many of the historic highlights that would have been seen during that period, plus additional curious and less ancient features to be found along the journey. A detailed description of the route to follow is given.
