When Susannah Morrow arrives from England to care for her motherless nieces in colonial Salem, she struggles to find her place in the family. Her beauty, obvious sensuality, and independence threaten many in the very religious Puritan community, including her fifteen-year old niece, Charity, who is guilt-ridden over her illicit love with a young apprentice and grieving her mother's death, and Charity's father, Lucas, who fights both temptation for Susannah and his terror that she challenges the very core of his beliefs. As rumors sweep the village, and suspicions against Susannah mount, exploding into the hysteria that will make Salem notorious, Charity, Lucas and Susannah will find themselves in the center of the storm, forced to come to terms with their worst fears. Peopled with real-life figures Elizabeth Proctor, the West Indian slave, Tituba, and Judge Danforth, and offering fascinating insight into the conflicts and fears that spawned this infamous period in American history, Susannah Morrow is both a timeless commentary on the nature of good and evil, and a beautiful love story.
