"Renjianshi" ("Research on The Human World") occupies a distinctive place in the Zhuangzi. Marked by a strong concern with engagement in the human world, it has long been the subject of considerable interpretive controversy. Notwithstanding the substantial achievements of earlier scholarship, the traditional commentarial interpretation of "Renjianshi" reveals two notable limitations: a tendency to follow established readings too closely and an emphasis on semantics at the expense of textual structure. Since the twentieth century, with the introduction of Western academic paradigms, relatively little scholarly attention has been devoted to "Renjianshi" as an independent text. It has more commonly been discussed within broader studies of the Zhuangzi, usually in a chapter or section that develops diverse interpretations on the basis of traditional commentaries. These features of the interpretive history of "Renjianshi" demonstrate the need for a critical reassessment of earlier methods of interpreting the Chinese classics. This book undertakes precisely such a reassessment. Its originality lies in its willingness to move beyond conventional approaches and explore new possibilities of interpretation.
