Gun Love is a fairy tale of survival at the sharp edge of the American dream and its love affair with firearms. At the edge of a roadside trailer park in Florida, fourteen-year-old Pearl France and her mother Margot live in a broken-down 1994 Mercury Topaz. Margot abandoned a privileged adolescence to raise Pearl alone and remnants of Limoges porcelain lay amongst the bug spray and powdered milk in their compact home. Her neighbours are the only family Pearl has ever known; a paraplegic veteran, a maths savant with a fondness for dolls, a bubblegum-pink Mexican housewife and a desperate preacher. Despite the fragility of their circumstances, Pearl is content to scavenge in the dump with her best friend, practise petty theft and daydream her way through church each week. But guns are everywhere in this world and the threat of violence is always looming. Dirty money, adult love and the vulnerability of a fringe community explode one morning to tragic effect and Pearl is forced to build some new happiness for herself from the chaotic rubble left behind.
