Older people are the largest single group using health, social care and other support services and it is important for them to be involved in research on social and health provision in old age. However, there is still only limited capacy among older people to be involved and the expectations of involving them is quite low. This report captures the different ways in which older people are involved in research and considers the potential for them to play a fuller part in research if they want to do so. Older people as researchers reviews existing literature and draws on interviews with both older people and academics involved in research involving older people. It outlines how older people who wish to partake in research can do so effectively, taking account of any special interests and needs of different groups of older people may have, and considers involvement in research for groups that may be excluded. The report also includes a data bank of organisations and people who have been involved in research and provides resources for those who wish to do research.
