This is a record of my time in the British Diplomatic Service, starting as a clerk in London in 1962 and working my way up until the high point of my career as Charge d'Affaires (Acting Ambassador) in the British Embassy in Sudan, from where I retired in 1997. During this time, I met, albeit briefly, some famous people, including the Queen. I was also present during the 1966 Revolution in Uganda, the 1983 Independence of St Kitts and Nevis, Jerusalem during the First Gulf War in 1991, as well as a Sudan split by a civil war in the mid-1990s. I make no claim that this is a historical memoir, except in the very broadest sense. Rather, it is a chronological selection of personal experiences, which I hope you will find interesting and entertaining.
