When the USAF entered the Vietnam War it lacked equipment and training in important areas for the conflict ahead. For example, little attention had been given to the employment of electronic countermeasures against enemy air defence radars, radar-controlled anti-aircraft weapons and (from mid-1965) surface-to-air missiles. In an effort to reduce growing losses to AAA and SAMs, a small force of converted Douglas B-66 light bombers that was already spread thinly between areas of political crisis - specifically in western Europe and Korea - was increasingly focused on Vietnam from May 1965. As Operation Rolling Thunder increased in its ferocity, RB-66B photo-reconnaissance aircraft were equipped with radar-jamming packages and they became a vital addition to virtually all missions over North Vietnam. Later, as modified EB-66C/Es, they jammed AAA and SA-2 missile control radars and gathered most of the useful Intelligence data on these deadly Soviet systems. The EB-66 force also became essential protectors of B-52 strikes and US Navy attack forces for the final stages of the war. This action-packed volume charts the evolution of the Destroyer from a light bomber into a vital electronic warfare platform through first-hand accounts, period photography and 30 colour profiles. Osprey Combat Aircraft Series, Comprehensive histories of fighting aircraft and their crews, highlighting their vital role in the development of warfare in the 20th and 21st centuries, A unique source of information, researched by recognised experts and brought to life by first-hand accounts from the combat veterans themselves, Concise, authoritative text is supported by up to 30 original colour artworks, specially commissioned scale drawings and the best archival photography from around the world Book jacket.
