Interstate 19 is the main route from Nogales, Mexico through Nogales, Arizona to the two largest narcotics transship cities in Arizona: Tucson and Phoenix. As far back as prohibition and probably before that Tucson and Phoenix have been hub cities for illegal alcohol, drugs and other illicit contraband entering the United States from Mexico. The actual value of the illicit contraband that traveled north on Interstate 19 (Billion Dollar Highway) into the United States has never been recorded but I venture to say it is easily in the billions of dollars. There are as many mediums to smuggle the illegal wares as the human mind can imagine. Billion $ Highway is an insight into a small portion of the overall picture but it will open some eyes, make you laugh and at times maybe make you cry. These are true stories as they occurred when U. S. Customs was my way of life.
