Paul was born in Honolulu, Hawaii at Tripler Army Hospital in April 1953 as his father was stationed at Hickam Field. He spent his early years before starting school in Okanogan, Wash. where grandfather served as County Treasurer for 20 years beginning in 1943. Paul has lived in Spokane area since 1958. He graduated from Gonzaga Prep, Spokane Falls CC and Eastern Washington University with dual degrees in journalism (1982) and education (1983). He's been married since 1978 to Melanie, a 37-year elementary school teacher who retired in 2014 and have two daughters (Danette & Meghan) and two grandchildren (Logan and Emma). Paul officially retired on Dec. 31, 2018 as a journalist with Cheney Free Press.


There his work won multiple state association awards for both writing and photography. He broke into the newspaper business and wrote seasonal motorsports columns and many other feature and news stories for the Spokesman Review from 1987-2007. He continues to be an advocate and promoter of motorsports across the region as operator of NW Motorsports News Services. Paul has written and self-published two successful local sports history books, "Saturday Nights Were Special: The history of hockey in Spokane" in 2001 and "Blue & White Dynamite: The story of Gonzaga Prep football" in 1989. Paul is also a noted local sports historian. Has operated part-time publishing business, Publication & Design Specialties which has served dozens of clients in its nearly 40 years of operation. His graphic design claim to fame comes as creator of the Spokane Chiefs Hockey Club logo in 1985. Paul has been an avid whitewater rafter for 40 years and has run over 40 rivers across the Western U.


S. including Hells Canyon, Salmon and Selway. Paul has been equally engaged in playing ice hockey for well over 50 years and has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Spokane Oldtimers Hockey Association for a over a decade.
