D.B. Dowd is a writer, illustrator and creator of Sam the Dog and other print works, including the illustrated serial Spartan Holiday. He also writes on visual culture, and co-edited Strips, Toons and Bluesies for Princeton Architectural Press 2006 with Todd Hignite. He is Professor of Art and American Culture Studies and Faculty Director of the Modern Graphic History Library at Washington University in St. Louis.
