The manuscript, of these Lectures on the early period of Church History is written continuously. It contains numerous corrections and additions, with which I have dealt as carefully as possible. Most of the references have been verified. I am responsible for the division into chapters, the foot-notes in square brackets, and many of the translations in the text. Use has been made of several Lectures written for special occasions.
