In this picture book for older children, a Rocky Cree (Indigenous) girl must choose which skill will define her life and role in her community. A coming of age story that highlights the Rocky Cree practice of sapotawana, traditional rites of passage that acknowledge each person as they attain certain skill levels at different stages of their lives. Rocky Cree translations and pronunciations are provided in a glossary in the back of the book. Set in the 1600s, this story focuses on the Asiniskow ithiniwak (Rocky Cree) from Northern Manitoba in Canada. William Dumas is a Rocky Cree Elder, educator, and administrator. He is the Cree Language and Culture Coordinator for the Nisichawayasihk (Nelson House) Education Authority. Pisim Finds Her Miskanaw , the first book in this series, won the Writer Category of the Public Communications Awards held by the Canadian Archeological Association. William Dumas also wrote the upcoming book The Gift of the Little People , a companion story to The Six Seasons of the Asiniskaw ithiniwak series.
