Samuel P. Thomas is not very well known today but he had an interesting, and sometimes valuable, role assisting the Confederate States of America as a Southern sympathizer in Cincinnati, Ohio during the Civil War.Samuel Thomas was a very successful tailor and merchant in Cincinnati, Ohio for many years, including the Civil War period. This gave Thomas an excellent way to explain the presence of unknown visitors and large amounts of cash.Thomas, and his wife Mary, were arrested on November 1, 1863 and charged with a number of crimes against the United States, including being part of a plot to rescue Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and his subordinate officers who were being held prisoner in the Ohio State Penitentiary. In later life Thomas stated that he made the suit General Morgan wore when he escaped from the Ohio Penitentiary.
