When people ask Gabrielle Scarlett what she does for a living, she says that she "makes things pretty." She spends her work hours (and the personal ones, too) creating art in a variety of forms - from the physical kind that can hang on your wall, to websites and strategic brand suites for small business owners (her profitable "day job" version of artistry). She now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland with her fiancé, but grew up in the same small Ohio town as Amba, her mother. While illustrating this volume, Gabrielle found herself reflecting on her own voice - how it's changed over time, how it's traveled with her where she's gone, and how it's expressed through her art; the work of her hands. Hands were a constant theme throughout this work, as you likely noticed - for Gabrielle, this wasn't just poignant because, well, that's where she holds her pen, like any artist. It was also a constant reminder that she too will one day look down, and see her mother's hands. You can learn more about Gabrielle on her website, https://gabriellescarlett.com.
