Metallenes are 2-dimensional metallic allotropes. They are composed of unsaturated coordinated metal atoms having a thickness of only a few atomic layers, a high specific surface area, a high density of unsaturated surface-coordinated atoms and form anisotropic nanosheets formed of isotropic metal bonds. Due to their unique physicochemical properties metallenes find widespread applications in various fields of current interest.
