This is a book about daily humor, tragedy, events and terms of railroading. While working on the railroad we became accustomed to seeing people spend hours watching us switch and watching the mainline trains go by. In visiting with these people it is amazing how much knowledge they have about railroads. We jokingly call them F. R. N.s, or "freaking railroad nuts!" It seems to be a hobby of interest to many people. My years on the railroad were interesting, fun, tragic at times, hard work, disciplined and intense.
They were a daily learning experience about people. I feel the American People are missing a great experience because the passenger service has become so limited. My family, myself and my wife and kids took many trips on the railroad and were fascinated by the American countryside. The kids are able to move around. The dome cars let them see for miles. Dining cars are available. There are lounge cars for adults and there are Pullman cars for sleeping. I hope these will return.
