For decades, the work of Mexican designer Pepe Mendoza (1923-1980) circulated the world in plain sight-cast-brass door pulls in a Tina Turner-owned Los Angeles house, malachite-inlaid hardware throughout Mexico City's Continental Hilton during its Marilyn Monroe-era heyday, monumental fittings in María Félix's storied Casa de la Tortuga-yet the after his death, Mendoza was largely forgotten. Born into a family in Chihuahua whose fortune came from arming Pancho Villa's revolution, Mendoza trained in Paris and Mexico City before opening a workshop in the Zona Rosa, where he forged a singular design language of brass forms inlaid with turquoise and malachite, drawing on pre-Columbian iconography, Asian motifs, and natural forms. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs of stand-alone objects and interiors featuring them, this is the first major monograph on Mendoza's work, authored by collector and designer Scott Formby. Organized around the recurring vocabularies of his work, the book gathers hardware, lighting, furniture, and decorative objects never seen together in one place, restoring Mendoza to his rightful place in twentieth-century design history.
