Driving her truck camper to the Adirondack region of upstate New York, artist Kate Corliss meets a friend for ten days of kayaking. They make the acquaintance of a local businessman who runs a wilderness guide service. Then he's found dead, and Kate's friend is arrested for his murder. Kate's efforts to find the real killer are hampered by a stalker who nearly capsizes her boat and later pursues her into a lonely backwater.
