Earlier this year there was a glut of books celebrating the centenary of Le Tour de France (including our own successful W&N official illustrated book). None, however, got quite as close to the race as Push Yourself Just a Little Bit More will, which is John's account of the 2003 and 2004 races from inside the security cordon, mingling with the cyclists, press and the 'Credit Lynnais trophy girls' in equal measure. John managed to blag his way (as an 'English journalist') right to the inner sanctum, even securing some choice seats for his family and friends in the grand stand on the Champs Elysees, just by the finishing line. Fittingly, from the former road manager of the Clash, Push Yourself Just a Little Bit More .is a kind of rock 'n' roll account of life on the road with Le Tour.
