This is an introduction and guide to stone circles found in Wales. Julian Heath relays the substance of any excavations made of individual circles, as well as the current theories concerning them. Plans are provided, along with sketches of grave-goods where found. Heath demonstrates an awareness of physical setting e.g. orientation in relation to significant astronomical, solar and lunar events, the framing of features such as mountain peaks and the site's position within the general landscape. A map of Wales, showing the locations of circles, clearly reveals areas of significant clustering, and sites are numbered and listed aphabetically. It is a pity that the author does not use these numbers in the subsequent explanatory chapters, or in relation to the excellent colour photographs provided.
This absence necessitates a lot of searching back and forth on the part of the reader. The descriptions are not overly-technical in style (even very basic terms appear in a glossary) and they succeed in encouraging the reader to visit the monuments to experience both their historical significance and the beauty of their setting. The gazetteer gives grid references and directions which generally prove helpful, while the bibliography is thorough, highlighting the author's use of latest interpretations, as well as original excavation reports.Julian Heath naturally focuses almost entirely on stone circles. However, he does include short sections on 'other sites of interest' so that the visitor is aware of other activities in the area, such as axe factories, Neolithic tombs and cave burials. A short, but valuable, list of useful websites is also provided.Although a little more thought could have made this a more convenient work of reference, Julian Heath has provided a valuable, well-researched and inspiring guide to his subject.Caroline ClarkIt is possible to use this review for promotional purposes, but the following acknowledgment should be included: A review from www.
