"T.I.M.E. = This Is My Energy. My time and my energy were very well spent in reading Patti O'Leary's chapter on Encouraging Motivation. As Patti mentions, motivation comes from within and therefore we cannot simply tell someone that they need to take action. They need to find the desire to motivate themselves from within.
Some, however, don't know where to begin or how to keep it going. That's where Patti's sensible strategies and techniques help coaches encourage motivational practices in others." -Eydie Stumpf, NLP, Grief Coach Reading Chapter 2 of People Skills - A Coaches Collaboration Book 2 had me hooked from the word go. Patti O'Leary expresses how she is a natural born motivator, but was actually discounting her super power for the very fact that it comes 'naturally' to her. I realized that I too am a natural motivator, but never accepted that. So I thank her for the aha! I think Patti makes extremely valuable points firstly on how we tend to discount the skills we already posses, because they are easy to "us," and more powerfully the importance and how invaluable it is to have good motivational skills, especially in the coaching industry. Her approach to how to be an effective motivator had me questioning my own skills and approach to the subject. I realized that while being supportive, encouraging, and an active listener with clients surely creates an "environment rich for motivation to thrive in," the true power though lies in unlocking a person's potential by understanding and identifying what motivates learning for them.
Motivation is definitely not the same for us all. Patti goes on to give some in-depth and practical avenues to explore for "unlocking a person's potential for greatness." She reminds us that having steps and benchmarks along the way will keep self-motivation going rather than aiming for the ultimate challenge or goal, which only leads to overload and overwhelm. I particularly liked the T.I.M.E & T.H.
I.N.K acronyms, and the roles correct time management and effective goal setting have on keeping motivation going. A tip-packed chapter from Patti with lots of nuggets of wisdom and constructive exercises that would leave anyone more motivated. Hell I am!" -Martine Metaxas, The Life Architect Design it. Build it.
