Prohibition-era gangster Edward Reed wakes up dead in August 1927 and learns from an ancient spirit named Adi that he has been granted time on earth to atone for his sins. The novel takes Eddie from his childhood to his death and through his afterlife, where he discovers the life he ought to have lived from the start.
