"On a Sunday afternoon in February 1919, Louisine Havemeyer led one hundred suffragists to picket in front of the White House. One by one, they were arrested. Born in New York City in 1855, Louisine grew up in a middle-class family that supported both womens education and suffrage. From a young age, she was an avid art collector and became friends with the famous American painter Mary Cassatt, who introduced her to other Impressionists. As she crossed paths with prominent forward-thinkers, Louisines worldview broadened-and her voice grew louder. When Louisines husband died, she was in a unique position: as a now wealthy widow, she was finally able to make her own decisions for her life and spend her money as she pleased, allowing her to finance the suffragist cause through her personal wealth and connections. She began by staging an art show in New York City, where she donated the admission fees to the Womens Political Union. A natural at giving inspiring speeches, she hit the road to campaign for womens right to vote.

When Alice Paul organized a whistle-stop train tour to demonstrate across America, but only allowed women whod been jailed to ride, Louisine marched to the capitol and would spend two nights in jail"-- Provided by publisher.
