Malkata is the site of a palace complex of King Amenhetep III at western Thebes, and adjacent to it lies the Birket Habu, a gigantic artificial basin still ringed by the great earthwork created by the spoil of digging it out. Although the excavations are scheduled to continue, by the end of 1974 the basic character and stratigraphy of this remarkable site had become clear and sufficient detail had been obtained to justify publishing the first group of final reports. This work aims to elucidate the exact nature of the raw materials used in the manufacture of both jar sealings and the 18th Dynasty amphorae, from which most of the ostraca originate. The inscriptions are examined, the types of jar sealings are studied, and their manufacture and decoration described.
