Can South Asia emulate an East Asian model? Is there scope for productive regional co-operation between East and South Asia? This volume brings a comparative perspective to examine economic development in South Asia. The notion that South Asian economies have tended to be less successful than those of East Asia is critically examined and the reasons why discussed. The nature and extent of the deviation in key performance indicators between South Asia and East Asia are looked at in detail, as is the question of how far the deviation is due to differences in policy regimes and the quality of governance.
