Kevin Hunt, an insurance investigator, chases every possible lead while he concentrates on this perplexing case. His office wants to know why so many of their clients are dying in fires. Every lead takes him to the same conclusion. The strange way all of the bodies are burned cannot be a coincidence. Kevin has always been a serious and practical man. His investigations have ended with common sense explanations about what happened to his company's clients. It was difficult for Kevin to agree with what his old Hopi Indian friend White Owl told him. How can ancient forces be punishing bad people who our laws don't bring to justice? In time he is convinced that unnatural forces acting like vigilantes must be what is causing these deaths.

These cases take him to places he never expected to see and people he didn't expect to meet. From the beginning Kevin knew he could not tell his office, or almost anyone else, his beliefs about the strange way people are dying. When a good looking sheriff's deputy named Laura Ryan starts working on the same case with Kevin, it's not easy to discourage her plans for them to be an item. The two of them have to dodge bullets on the Mexican border and worry about threats from a vicious drug and human smuggling cartel. Eventually Kevin quits looking for what causes the mysterious burning deaths. He knows the answer to that.
