But they were necessarily excluded from that volume by its bulk. The brevity that characterizes Volume XII. will also be found in this narrative, for I have had no time to change its character.

Properly, its publication should have preceded that of Vol. XII. The information needed for the preparation of these chapters was fuller and more readily obtained than that required for Vol. XII.
