After the events of Book 1, the battle lines were drawn and Shane and the vampires found themselves faced with the treachery of Dimas, who sold the vampires out to the witches. In Book 2 the battle is basically resolved but not the conditions of the prophecy. Shane's sister Julianna, who wa killed by Dimas in the last book, is resurrected by the witches to use against Shane. Meanwhile, the stepdaughters of the head of the witches' coven, Theresa, are also recruited into the ranks of the two factions, one, Kara, is turned, becoming a vampire; the other, Emily, takes the blood oath as a witch. There are two showdowns. The first comes when the vampires have to rescue Julianna, who was resurrected as a human, from the traitor Dimas. The second comes when Shane has to end the war with the witches. But it turns out that these showdowns are not enough.

The vampires are still faced with the dark prophecy.
