"Harold Innis's Political Economy in the Modern State was originally published by Ryerson Press in 1946. It received a single print run of under 1,000 copies and has been out of print for decades. While Innis's other three media and communication books also sold poorly, were reviewed unfavorably (for the most part) , and were not reprinted for at least 20 years, times have changed and Innis is now recognized as an insightful, seminal, and important media and communication theorist, historian, and critical analyst. Innis's other three communication/media books are in print, so reprinting PEMS will make available for the first time in 50 years the full Innis canon in this field, thus allowing for a more complete and accurate view of his work. Made up of a collection of seemingly disparate essays, PEMS sheds light on Innis's political and cultural concerns, including the centralization of power and emerging forms of fanaticism expressed both domestically and internationally. In addition to a lengthy (15,000 word) general introduction contextualizing PEMS in Innis's body of work and the field of communication and media studies, UTP authors Robert E. Babe and Edward Comor have written introductions for each chapter and compiled a comprehensive index, making this project more of a "critical edition" that a simple reprint."--.
