The term 'war hero' is often misused these days, but there is no doubt that it applied to Rear-Admiral Sir Anthony Miers. A submarine commander described by superior officers as totally loyal, outstandingly keen, fearless, hot-tempered and incautiously spoken, he was a brilliant leader and highly decorated. He was blunt and uncompromising. After his death, when a broadcaster suggested he was responsible for a wartime atrocity it raised passionate feelings that continue to this day. 'No one could be indifferent to his presence, or doubt his coura he was not always easy to deal with and he was not always right in his judgements or his decisions. But his impulses were so often warm and generous that while his energies might raise the temperature of the affairs that he was engaged in, they also created wide tolerance and great loyalties.'
