For the fiftieth anniversary of the Summer of Love, San Fran '60s and its sequel More San Fran '60s are now combined in one volume, San Fran '60s: Stories of the Hippies, the Summer of Love, & San Francisco, Volumes 1 & 2. Plus a new story has been added that has not previously appeared anywhere, the longest in the collection, "The Land." Of course, there have been memoirs and histories, but this collection of autobiographical short stories is the only time the devices of literary fiction have been used by a participant to put you there, living it. The stories range in tone from comic to harrowing to lyrical. Overall, San Fran '60s is darker, edgier, and more intimate than anything on the subject before. In addition to the requisite sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll, there is murder, madness, and God. One of the murders officially ended the Summer of Love. Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and William Burroughs make an appearances.

LSD and free love, Haight-Ashbury and the Hell's Angels, the Hip and the Straight, it's all in these stories. The themes of many of these short stories are those of rock 'n roll, and the structure of the collection is modular; that is, all of the stories in both collections, San Fran '60s and More San Fran '60s, are interconnected, yet each is self-contained, so they can be read in any order. Thus, even the structure of the collection expresses that era. Also, rather than have an aspect of a larger over-arching story in each short story, each is invested as much as possible with the whole of that San Fran '60s experience, so the whole is in each part.
