This is a fictional story to highlight that salvation by faith in Christ alone is very real. An Antipope is someone the Catholic church says is making a false claim to be Pope. There hasn't been an Antipope since the 15th century. To Catholics, the Pope is the substitute of Jesus on earth, the Vicar of Christ. The Pope has full legislative, judicial and executive power over the Vatican, which is a small country. The Pope has supreme, full, immediate, and universal power in the Church, which he is always able to exercise freely and without question. The Pope is an absolute Monarch and there is no formal or legal mechanism for the removal of a Pope. What if the Pope's actions caused the Cardinals to declare him an Antipope?.
