Previous knowledge of the division of Israel into two kingdoms, and their unfaithfulness toward God would be helpful to understand why God asked Prophet Hosea to marry Gomer, a woman, from the family of Prostitutes. Israel had become unfaithful to God and was divided into to two kingdoms. The northern kingdom was ruled by Jeroboam, and the southern kingdom was ruled by Rehoboam (1Kings 12:13, 14 and 1Kings 12:25-29). The northern kingdom consisted of the ten tribes of Israelites, and the southern kingdom consisted of the tribe of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin. The tribe of Levi, who were priests, got assimilated into both the regions.
