Alan Jones is Senior Principal Scientific Officer and Deputy Director of the Health and Safety Executive's Explosion and Flame Laboratory, Harpur Hill, Buxton, England. He previously worked as Head of Field Instrumentation and Techniques Sub-Group, Principal Scientific Officer, and Head of Gas Detection Section, Research and Laboratory Services Division, Health and Safety Executive, Sheffield, England. The author of numerous journal articles, mainly in kinetics and surface science, Dr. Jones is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London. He received his B.Sc. (1962) and Ph.D.


(1965) degrees in chemistry at University of Leeds, England. Brian D. McNicol is Division Head, Analysis, Thornton Research Center, Chester, England. Prior to this he was Program Director of Management Training at Shell International Petroleum Company, London, England, Senior Scientist of Fuel Cell and Electro catalysis Research at Thornton Research Center, and a scientist at Koninklijke-Shell Laboratorium, Amsterdam, Netherlands. The author or coauthor of over 50 publications and editor of the book Power Sources for-Electric Vehicles, Dr. McNicol is recognized as an international expert on fuel cells, electrocatalysis and catalyst characterization. He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, American Chemical Society, and Physical Chemistry Subcommittee of the Science and Engineering Council (U.K.


). Dr. McNicol received the B.Sc. degree (1963) in chemistry and Ph.D. degree (1966) in solid state chemistry at Glasgow University, Scotland.
