This book evolved over my 18 years of attending and experiencing Day of the Dead. From the very beginning, I was fortunate to have the help of many locals. They provided me valuable information and brought me personal items such as photos and items they used on their altars. Day of the Dead is a very unique experience. People follow basic traditions, but each person adds his own personal touch. Similarly each family has its own little special way of honoring the dead, each village has its special way of making it uniquely theirs. As you read this book, keep in mind that I wrote it the way I experienced the celebration, perhaps with my own special interpretation. This book has been a labor of love.

When I began this project, I never could have imagined how detailed it would be, how much it would affect me and how much it would change my life. I now view and understand and have a deeper appreciation of the respect, dedication and sacrifice Oaxacans show their faithful departed.
